As our priorities are currently constituted in the west, it's simply not profitable for Big Pharma to try to cure every disease. In fact their entire business plan revolves around avoiding that possibility. They would rather treat the sickness than cure it because the first makes for return customers while the latter destroys that market.
In short, by their behaviour, there is a strong argument for saying that Big Pharma are the world's worst drug dealers, far more so than any cartel or mob.
