Thanks Lena! Superimportant material! Especially toward the end when discussing the competition for opposing countries to be tempted to use these AI systems in order to knockout their opponent. Yuval Noah Harari discussed this (type of)temptation in the late 2010s. Two quotes from the video and then a creative, hopefully helpful, question.
[4m07s mark]"The AI systems were given an escalation ladder with options ranging from diplomacy to total nuclear war. Across 329 turns and roughly 780,000 words of reasoning the models repeatedly - and I would like to highlight that, the models repeatedly chose nuclear escalation and not only that none of the [AI] models ever chose full accomodation or surrender...they chose nuclear war no matter how badly they were losing in that specific war game. At best they temporarily reduced violence, but then they reversed course and accelerated their own demise. That's deeply significant."
[at 5m21s mark] "And guess what it actually gets worse. IN 86% of the simulated oonflicts accidents occured. Accidents occured. Actions escalated beyond what the AI itself appeared to intend. So in other words, even with massive processing power and advanced technologies, these systems still mader errors in The Fog of War that led to an uncontrolled escalation.
Do the AI systems improve if they watch the Errol Morris film with Robert McNamara from 2003 called The Fog of War?
lol I was messing around with the Internet archive and looked up Kim’s Twitter and see her tag Joe Rogan ask him out on an Date or valentines Day LMAO. Kim used to be funny and silly when she was a small channel now she kinda sound corporate some times.
Excellent article. Thanks Philosophy Vault!
“Complexity creates fragmentation. Fragmentation prevents holistic thinking. Immaturity plus power equals catastrophe” - Indeed!
But can we learn from past patterns(history)? So far, humans have not. That’s not to say the other members of the animal kingdom have either. Though I guess it’s conceivable that some other members of the animal kingdom. I guess there is a lesson in that and in this article. When the specialized knowledge becomes too narrow - much more silo than “systems” oriented, so to speak - the narrowness coming from human ideologization, something that the other members of the animal kingdom don’t have to worry about. So while the rest of the animal kingdom, usually - no matter the level or type of dominance - keeps their specialization alongside their ability to look ahead - like foxes storing food underground for the coming winter - the human version of “getting ahead” is usually emotionalized...
@KimIversen Think the claim you made is false The claim that Trump is being blackmailed by Israel with Epstein tapes as a pedophile doesn't hold up, because if that were the case, he would have already been coerced into launching a full-scale war with Iran during his first term, given the intense pressures and opportunities at the time. Instead, it's far more plausible that the traumatic assassination attempt in Butler, Pennsylvania, shifted his perspective and pushed him to fall in line with certain powerful interests for self-preservation, rather than any supposed Epstein list or compromising recordings dictating his actions.
